The permit process:
Don't get misled by a individual who says that you don't need a permit for work being performed at your
residence. Just about everything done in the construction process needs a permit in the Parish in which the
residence is located. This will protect you in the future, especially if such contractor does something wrong in
your project. The law states before any work is to commence that such work must be filed with the jurisdiction
presiding over your area.
On a renovation project, once work has begun and has reached a point that requires a wall covering, e.g.,
drywall, then a rough-in inspection must be ordered by the licensed contractor that is on record with your
project. This is where most problems start. In most Parishes an "O.K. to close wall sticker" will be affixed to the
window approving the next stage of construction and everything installed by the contracted is in code
compliance with the either the 'ICC' International Code Counsel or the Code that covers the work performed.
Remember there need to be the basic 4 inspections: building (if any structure has been modified), electrical,
plumbing, and mechanical (air-conditioning and gas). Having all covered insures that you as the Homeowner
won't be penalized, that necessary utilities won't be held up once the project is complete, or worse -- that the
walls won't have to be reopened! So keep up with the rough-in....
Once the project is complete a final inspection is required which will not only satisfy the obligation by the
Parish but releases the utility meter you will require to live. There are more details for each category and the
process for a few Parishes, but 99% are the same procedure.... BE AWARE not a statistic...
